In February, we published A Love Letter to All the Mixed Kids Out There, which included a call for folks who identify as mixed to reach out if interested in participating in an upcoming project.
We received an overwhelming response from readers and are so excited to announce an ongoing monthly series on mixedness. First, let’s define mixed and who we want to hear from: in short, everyone who identifies as mixed or has anything to say about mixedness. You might have a white parent and a black parent, be a brown person adopted by a white family, be a brown parent whose child is mixed, have two black parents from different states or countries, be a desi in a relationship with a latinx person, be someone who is affected by the colorism that narratives around mixed exceptionalism can generate and operate through, or any iteration in between or outside of these examples. Our vision for this project is as an inclusive, broad, and thorough investigation of mixedness-- it’s beauties, complexities, challenges, and discriminatory aspects. If you have something to say about mixedness, we want to hear from you. We encourage you to submit any type of meditation on mixedness in whatever form you choose, about any topic, but will also provide monthly prompts to help guide and structure our collective work. We are also always open to your thoughts, suggestions, and especially prompt ideas. What question do you want to answer about mixedness? What is something you think of often regarding mixedness and have never been asked? We want this to be the place for that. So friends, what is your experience with mixedness and what does that mean to you? Please send us your stories through our contact page. We look forward to hearing from you <3
