It’s that time of day. You’ve been at it for hours, dedicated to your tasks since you woke up, been in relation to others the majority of the day, attending to life's many responsibilities all while navigating the world of the white heteropatriarchy. The end of the day is iffy. I find when I've been out and about all day, the end is full of a mix of emotions. Sometimes the day is full of real shit and the world is too much. It is in these times I ask myself how we can make space for ourselves to give ourselves the self love we need and deserve. The end of the day is our time to nourish ourselves, give ourselves love, unwind, and go inward. I shift me into “self love time” when put in my headphones and experience music that gets me into my body.

Here are a few tracks, compiled by few friends and me, that help us separate, come down, and close from an intense day out in the world.

1. WTF by Missy Elliott

2. Go With It by Tokimonsta

3. Thinkin Bout You by Frank Ocean

4. Golden by Jill Scott

5. All the Way Up by Fat Joe, Remy Ma

6. Nah by Junglepussy

7. In the Beginning by K’naan

8. 20 Feet Tall by Erykah Badu

9. Grown Woman by Beyonce

10. Hickory by Kool AD

11. Guillotine by The Coup

12. Hugo Chavez by Das Racist

13. Rock the Boat by Aaliyah

14. Diddy Bop by Noname

15. Soy Yo by Bomba Estereo

    Self Love

    Dear Readers,

Be honest to yourself about what you want: out of life, to eat, to feel, to do in this world. Honor whatever it is, without judgment. Give yourself whatever it is you need. This is a process that takes time. It is the process of getting to know yourself, getting to know your body – without judgments or assumptions – learning to let all the parts of you be what they are.

Face them, hear them, know them, and find peace in letting them be.

Many of us work against ourselves – denying us pleasure, fulfillment, and fullness. This is no way to find peace. We are working for peace within our bodies and ourselves to reconnect us to our power center. We are learning how to listen to ourselves and honor our needs and desires.

Be kind, be gentle, be love, be open.

    Enjoy your body.

    Love,
    AFO
