NEW THIS MONTH
Natalí G. is a 30-year-old queer, trans, two-spirit, Hopi (Native American), and Xican@ (Mexican American), who uses they/them pronouns. Currently living in Sacra, Califas (Sacramento, California), they are the owner and creator of Firme Arte, where Natalí “is using their platform to shift the artistic game and to combine their own original art style with the ancestral ways of healing that have throughout the ages been stolen through rigorous colonization. Firme Arte is currently creating a community of strong, empowered, witchy human beings dedicated to the pursuit of truth, self growth, and a divine cosmic connection to the multiverse. This is a space for honest evolution through the medium of using self care as an act of resistance. The combination of deep rooted love for music, the occult, culture, and the communities that they represent is what makes Firme Arte a one of a kind safe space for you to dive deep into the unknown depths that is yourself.” Natalí’s turn ons are the smell of copal, Tarot cards in dive bars, jazz, vegan sushi and long trips into the cosmic mind. They are also a second generation RCAF (Royal Chicano Air Force) artist.
Tara Sonali Miller: What kind of artist are you? How would you describe your art to someone who is new to your work?
Natalí G.: I am an X-men, Alchemist & Wizard.
I am a queer indigenous alchemist sent here to this planet at this time to heal the ancestral traumas that live [within] myself and to collectively wake up the common being by allowing them space and language for their deep rooted growth. I channel my ancestral roots through art in many mediums and allow myself to be a vessel for the messages that we need to receive on a deep rooted cosmic level.
I would describe the bodega as an indigenous, grungy, lo-fi witchy shop / Indigenous Self Care Space Cult.
TSM: Your website AKA Internet Bodega says you are “using [your] platform to shift the artistic game and to combine [your] own original art style with the ancestral ways of healing that have throughout the ages been stolen through rigorous colonization.” Can you expand on why you use this particular medium for your art? In what ways is it better than other mediums at saying and doing what you want it to?
Natalí G.: It felt selfish of me after a while to create art that did nothing for the communities that I represent. I spent a lot of years just trying to survive and in that process found myself involved in a lot of situations for money that my heart just simply wasn’t in. I have found that when you start chasing your truth that’s when the universe opens up so many channels and opportunities that you couldn’t even imagine. It took me a long while to realize that everything that I truly resonated with throughout my lifetime was setting me up to be able to build this collection of work and to be able to translate my experiences through art forms that really aren’t considered “Art.”
I got tired of not seeing myself represented anywhere. I think that creating new platforms for the way we see art is so necessary and Firme Arte is my way of expressing my love of the deep rooted magick that exists throughout my cultures.
We as humans living at this time in history really gotta wake the fuck up to the fact that SO much of what we do, think, say, feel and act upon has all been carefully crafted, placed and orchestrated by the devils who forced their settler ways upon our ancestors and brought with them a new age of Colonization. I try to use my platform to slowly ease babes into finding new ways of thinking and I try to inspire them to enter a new era of loving themselves.
Self love is such a radical tool for transformation in all aspects of life and the state of the world we exist in. The collective evil “they” spend a lot of time making sure we never feel complete or whole. They sell us shit we don’t need, they create marketing campaigns that exploit our hurt & insecurities and tell us that we aren’t as beautiful as we are. They have us spend our time, labor and money worrying about made up shit like getting married, Jesus and gender. They use our nationalities to divide us and keep us busy hating each other.
The fact of the matter is that if we all really woke up to the TRUE fuckery that exists around us and started finding strength within ourselves to change the game it would be detrimental to their agenda, which has always been to keep the powerful magic that exists in our communities hidden from us. Well fuck that, I am here to use my platform to fuck their game all up and create a world with stronger more self aware conscious x-men mutant like beings who are dedicated to bringing truth and love to the forefront of our existence. When we collectively heal and wake up we ultimately heal ourselves and the outside world.
I wouldn’t say that this medium is better than any other. I think that if you are a breathing human being on this planet with a platform who wants to bring about change then you have a duty to use said platform in any way you can to better yourself, your ancestors, your community and the planet as a whole. We have a whole bunch of work to do babes and I am humbled by anyone that is here to do the work with us.
TSM: What is one of your favorite products right now? Why?
Natalí G.: It has to be the line of Crystal Companion Candles I created. I find so much strength and harmony in performing candle magick. Each one is unscented 100% vegan soy wax and is dressed with an array of ritually crafted
botanical spell oils, programmed crystals, herbs and real magick intent. Each candle is adorned with original artwork that I created and they all correspond with a variety of magical purposes such as queer love, moon magick, cleansing/limpa, protection just to name a few.
Also our Hella Sensitive Oil is our best selling product and the idea for it was given to me during mediation with my guides. It is an anti-anxiety crystal roll on oil blend that is created to ground and center empathic / sensitive babes. Empaths are often heavily influenced by the energies of others and act like emotional sponges to the spaces & situations around them. This oil is a sacred mix of magical elements & ingredients designed to aid you in finding center and calming the mind as well as protect the spiritual / psychic self.
TSM: How do you get in touch with, learn about, and embrace the teachings and rituals of your ancestors? Can you talk about how and why this is important to you personally and for your art?
Natalí G.: A lot of our ways & magics died with the birth of colonization and the slaughtering of the old ways and teachings. Christianity came in and was made the forced standard and they taught the children that the old ways had died and money, marriage, a house and security were the new gods. All of that trauma lives within myself and I deal with a lot of sadness that I do not know more of my traditional Hopi ways. I do what I can with my own research on my people and try and create my own ways of creating ritual for my own practices.
My ancestors live through me in my skin, my blood and in my bones. I use my time in meditation to tap into their energy, so many of the answers we search for and the teachings of our ancestors live deep within ourselves. I talk to them aloud everyday and ask them to use me as a way to continue the work that needs to be done. We exist in this amazing age of technology where you literally have an oracle at your fingertips. If you have a question or have a newfound peaked interest in something well guess what babe you can google that shit. We are privileged enough to be able to access so much knowledge so instantly, don’t take it for granted.
TSM: What does self care as resistance mean to you?
Natalí G.: Taking the time to use self care as a way to remove the programs within us that hold us back from truly shifting the matrix we exist in. Using self care to empower yourself and heal the ancestral traumas that we carry within ourselves. If we don’t take time to fix & heal from these traumas they will just be passed on through our children and through our next lives.
TSM: You have such a powerful presence on Instagram. You often engage your followers to share their stories with you, asking questions like, “How are you babes spending your full moon?” and “What are a few of your favorite ways to celebrate yourself?” Can you talk about how and why you cultivate this community through storytelling?
Natalí G.: So many of us feel alone. I myself am such a lonely soul and honestly without the support of the community I’ve built I would be so lost. I honestly can’t believe that so many babes communicate and participate in our daily discussions and readings. I feel it is important to create safe spaces for babes to express themselves and to be able to see others express themselves in a space that does not judge them. I use the open dialogues we create to show the commonness we all share. We are truly never alone and I hope that the community space I create helps lonely babes everywhere understand that fact. Lot’s of times we are all being affected by forces beyond our control such as what is happening in the stars at that time. I hope to showcase that the human experience is something that a lot of us are connected to each other in. If we can see the similarities in another’s struggle then we find comfort in our own.
TSM: You recently wrote a really powerful post about the trauma you experience through misgendering. How does your work and art help you navigate the cisheteropatriarchy? What is your advice to your queer, trans, and nonbinary folks, of color especially, who are struggling to honor and come out to themselves and their communities?
Natalí G.: My work totally helps me release a lot of the frustration I feel about living in cisheteropatriarchy; I use those “red” feelings to express my love for my community and to try and hustle enough with my work to one day create actual physical safe spaces for the babes in our community. I use my design work to create homage to my queerness through the musical and film references that inspire me throughout my work. I use those designs to create products that will ultimately give the babe using them space and time to transform their ways of thinking. Ultimately breaking down the cisheteropatriarchy piece by fucking piece.
Advice: It’s not a race to come out. Not everyone has the same story as you and not everyone has the ability, language or privilege to come out. It took me 27 years to be totally honest with myself and to find the words for what I am. I grew up in a space that rejected my queerness and didn’t allow for the idea of trans/two spiritedness. It was as if my family would have rather seen me in an abusive hetero shit bag of a “relationship” than face the fact that I was queer and was drowning in being someone who I hella fucking wasn’t. It boggled my mind that so much of the abuse I endured was from being sexually shamed or forced to participate in hetero norms and well honestly living inside that box for so long almost killed me and I want you all to know that IT GETS BETTER BABE. I FUCKING PROMISE. Your ancestors are listening. Your pain is our pain and you are so valuable and important to this planet. You are so gifted and there was once a time where our queerness was honored as we were considered the gifted ones. I am here to say that those ideas are still alive and well and I honor you and your gifts. Be excellent to each other and know that when you are ready or are in a safe enough place to come out then you will have a community of open arms waiting for you here with us. I want you all to live your truth boldly and unapologetically in a space that will safely allow you to do so. I pray for everyone of you and I ask the divine faces of the multiverse to protect you and allow you room to breathe and grown into whoever it is you want to be.
If you are in a space where you are comfortable with being open about your truth then don’t be afraid to make your feelings known to those you occupy space with. We need to make it socially acceptable to ask people how they would like to be referred to and to protect each other in public spaces. Ask someone before touching them and don’t make a fucking spectacle of their existence. Pay them for their time, existence and labor if you’re going to be annoying. Stand up for one another.
TSM: Where do you find inspiration?
Natalí G.: I find inspiration in…
80’s & 90’s pop culture, smoking weed, candle magick, the water spirit, TOOL (band), masturbating, working with crystals, herbalism, conspiracy theories, pearl jam, comedy, the creation of SUB POP records, Bill & Ted, indigenous practices, grunge, psychedelics, gaming, crying, space, Chris Farley, smoke scrying, jazz, heartbreak, vampires, rosemary, My grandmother La Patrona, my incoming facial hair, Chino Moreno’s angelic voice, orgonite/organic energy totems, the Montauk project, the bodega community, my two spirits, tacky shit, my queerness, arcades, eating/cooking vegan, skateboarding, my pets & gratitude.

TSM: What are some risks you take in your art that went really well or really badly?
Natalí G.: It has never worked out for me when making stuff without intention or truth behind it. It always fails. When I made the decision to move back into my childhood home where I endured a lot of trauma in order to do Firme Arte full time, that’s when I was really blown away by the amount of successes I was starting to feel/receive. I made the choice to sacrifice a lot of my feelings in order to get the work done. I had told myself so many times before that I would never go back there and that had been myself running from my traumas for so long. That choice was rooted in sacrifice, healing, and truth and it has been working itself out since.
TSM: Can you tell us about some of the comments you receive from your fans? Does your community tell you how much your work means to them? What does this mean for you?
Natalí G.: I honestly receive at least one message every few weeks from a babe who Is completely enthusiastic about their new found ways of coping and existing through rigorous self love and care. I am completely blown away by the amount of strength and honesty babes put into themselves. I have tried to put out so much of myself into my work and to see it being received in such a positive evolved way is beyond amazing and so inspiring. Every message I receive heals a small broken part of myself and I am so fucking stoked to be able to exist in a world with babes who are waking up to the reality of the monumental work we have to do here as consciousness harnessed inside meat suits. I feel the proud to watch each babe grow.
TSM: You are so good about reminding folks to hydrate! Why is hydration so important? How is this connected to self love?
Natalí G.: One of the first pieces of art that really resonated with me in the early stages of my awakening was a film entitled What the Bleep Do We Know!? In that film there is a part that goes into depth about the element of water and how it reacts to words and intent. Well that movie absolutely blew me away and I was so grateful to have found it at that point in my life as it became such a impactful film for me.
The specific part about water absolutely shook me to my core, as most of our human bodies are made up of that magical element. While watching this portion of the film it resonated deep within myself that we have to take better care of Ourselves and be more aware of the situations and people we surround ourselves with. If yelling something negative at a vial of water can change its molecular structure so dramatically, imagine what the water within our own bodies is doing when we force ourselves (as beings who are made up of so much water) to be in situations that we do not want to be in or surround ourselves with people or energies that are gross & negative. I feel it is important for babes to constantly hydrate in order to stay connected to the high vibration that resonates within all of us.
So much of our existence is bombarded with ways to keep our internal vibration very low and that includes being dehydrated. I recommend everyone constantly stay hydrated in order to keep the inflammation in the body down and to stay spiritually sharp. When you do come in contact with the element of water make sure to always speak or pray words of intent to it along with show it your gratitude for your ability to be able to work with such an incredible substance. Do not take this element for granted, we are so privileged to be able to access it so easily. Also make sure to drink out of BPA free containers/glasses. Do your research on this chemical. It exists in almost all plastics and is so harmful to the reproductive systems of humans. Plastic is garbage and is a main tool used in the enslavement/mind control of humanity.
TSM: On your website you write, “Firme Arte is currently creating a community of strong, empowered witchy human beings dedicated to the pursuit of truth, self growth and a divine cosmic connection to the multiverse.” How do you stay committed to and grounded in self growth? Are there practices you can share with our community? How can your work and products help us witchy humans in this journey?
Natalí G.: I’d say right now for me staying committed in my self growth is pretty easy. I am wise enough now to sit back and look upon the way I used to act or react in situations and I truly never want to return to that state. I was one of the most negative human beings on the planet and that type of behavior was sucking the life out of me and resulted in a complete mental and physical meltdown in my late 20’s that ultimately resulted in my conscious awakening.
My Self growth is rooted in creating safe spaces for myself to exist in comfortably. I try to spend as much time as I can outside talking to nature. I find it so fascinating how the wind blows and most of us just seem to completely ignore that fact. Some of my personal rituals are to simply be outside with the elements playing music smoking a Spliff and just speaking to my surroundings. I find that magic doesn’t have to be something we spend money on or be too complicated. Magick & Spell work can be what you make of it as you yourself are a powerful wizard.
I am not taking away from the fact that I do create a variety of hand crafted magical infused products for babes to interact and work with if they feel drawn to. I try wholeheartedly to create products that I would use myself to manifest and navigate through this life. I try to create products that will ease the overwhelming feelings that stem from being a conscious and sensitive creature existing in a world filled with muggles/non magickal folk. I hope to use my work to introduce babes to a way to manifest their goals and desires by tapping into the Magicks that once were and always have been.
